Kasa/Swasa(Cough & Breathing Difficulties)

Kasa Swasa Cough Breathing Difficulties

In Ayurveda, Kasa (Cough) and Swasa (Breathing Difficulties) are considered disorders of the respiratory system that arise due to the imbalance of the three doshas, particularly Vata and Kapha. These conditions are not merely seen as symptoms, but as reflections of deeper systemic imbalances—often connected to poor digestion, weak immunity, and environmental factors.

Kasa (Cough)

Kasa is classified into five types:

  • Vataja Kasa – Dry cough with chest pain and hoarseness of voice.

  • Pittaja Kasa – Associated with yellow phlegm, burning sensation, and fever.

  • Kaphaja Kasa – Thick mucus, nasal congestion, and heaviness.

  • Kshataja Kasa – Due to lung injury or chronic irritation.

  • Kshayaja Kasa – Linked with tissue depletion (e.g., TB).

Swasa (Breathing Difficulty / Dyspnea)

Swasa is also classified into five types, the most notable being:

  • Maha Swasa – Severe breathlessness, often chronic.

  • Chinna Swasa – Interrupted or irregular breathing.

  • Tamak Swasa – Resembles bronchial asthma, worsens at night or with exertion.
